The Niagara Escarpment in Ontario, Canada is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The Escarpment runs from Lake Ontario in the south over 700 kilometres to the most northerly part of the Bruce Peninsula. On the Bruce Peninsula, where we were last week, we went to the National Park that’s part of that reserve. We took a short walk up the Georgian Bay hiking trail on our first day. These photos are of the rock cliffs overlooking Georgian Bay with a view across Indian Head Cove of The Grotto, a very popular site with visitors. On the deeply engraved rocks are very old small cedar trees and other plants hardy enough to live in this environment of wind, rock and cold winters.
The water here looks tropical in its lovely pale turquoise near the shore, but it was only around 9 or 10 degrees Celsius when we were there.

I’ve just returned from a week on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario. A very beautiful part of the province that I’ll be telling you about in posts to come. Here’s a photo of rocks overlooking Georgian Bay near the Grotto in the National Park.

Last week, black locust trees were in bloom in Toronto. Their sweet perfume filled the air at Todmorden Mills where I’d walked. I love their profuse, cascading blossoms.

Ferns in the Wildflower Preserve

I saw what I believe are ostrich ferns on a recent walk in the Wildflower Preserve at Todmorden Mills. If I’ve misidentified the ferns, do let me know. The day was moderate–around 18 degrees Celsius, with a mixture of sun and cloud. The ferns seem very much at home in this moist forested area in the Don Valley in Toronto. I find their shapes very beautiful.

The sansevieria, snake plant, that I’ve grown indoors for years has flowered for the first time. I hadn’t known what its flowers looked like and each night took many photos as the petals opened and the intense perfume filled the air. I love the contrast of delicate flowers with bold thick succulent leaves.

At Todmorden Mills, June 5, 2013.
I went to Todmorden Mills in Toronto in the early evening yesterday. It was cool and sunny and my preoccupations of the day left me as I got closer to the trees, freshly mown grass, birds and flowers in this bit of preserved nature. The irony of its being so close to the Don Valley Expressway is never far from consciousness.

There’s a wildflower preserve at the site—a short trail through forest by ponds. There I saw yellow and violet irises growing by the water, plus many wild phlox. I came upon a man and his beloved dog having a walk as well as a jogger. Many robins, sparrows, red winged blackbirds and cardinals were with me.

Last weekend I went to Kortright Centre for Conservation for a walk in the woods. The day was cool and sunny—perfect weather for hiking in comfort. The woods were a vibrant green, a little deeper in hue than the first yellow green of spring.
